GILBERT — Roland-Story turned in one of the most impressive upsets of the Iowa high school boys’ basketball season Friday with a 68-57 overtime win over Gilbert at Gilbert.

Gilbert entered the game ranked No. 7 in Class 3A and undefeated in Heart of Iowa Conference play. The Tigers had completely decimated Roland-Story in their first meeting, winning by 46 points at Story City in December.

But thanks to an amazing defensive effort, especially on the perimeter, Roland-Story was able to turn the tide in a big way Friday.

“Gilbert hadn’t been under 60 (points) all year,” Roland-Story head boys’ basketball coach Darrin Berggren said. “Great defensive effort out of our guys.

Roland-Story held Gilbert to 4 of 22 shooting from 3-point range. The Norsemen also limited Gilbert to 31-percent shooting overall from the field.

Berggren said the key to his team’s success was slowing down the game and making Gilbert work for its points.

“At halftime, we really focused on getting back in transition and guarding without fouling to make them score in the half court,” Berggren said. “Our guys did a great job of that.”

Roland-Story led 26-25 at the half. Gilbert tied the score after three quarters and went ahead late in the fourth.

But Roland-Story’s Carter Greenfield hit the tying 3-point basket with nine seconds left to force overtime with the score knotted at 52-52.

Roland-Story then dominated the extra session. The Norsemen got hot offensively at just the right time, going for 16 points in overtime to pull away for the big victory.

“Loved how they stuck together through some pressure moments,” Berggren said.

Roland-Story improved to 6-9 overall and 4-6 in the HOIC with the win. Gilbert dropped to 12-3 overall and 9-1 in the conference.

Kade Faga went off for 22 points for Roland-Story after making 8 of 12 field goals, including three 3-pointers. Greenfield had 14 points and six rebounds, Dylan Matheason 13 points and eight boards and Ben Chelsvig five points and 10 rebounds.

Matt Ockey, Matt Barragy and Jeff Rudman each scored 10 points for Gilbert. Ockey also had seven rebounds and three steals, Barragy eight rebounds and one block and Rudman four rebounds.

Will Turner added seven points and assists for the Tigers, but was held to 2 of 15 shooting by Roland-Story’s outstanding defense.
