STORY CITY — Roland-Story nearly pulled off another big comeback against Nevada Jan. 31, but the Norsemen fell just short this time in a 62-56 loss to the Cubs.

Roland-Story came back from 12 down to knock off Nevada in overtime back in the second game of the season. In the rematch, the Norsemen found themselves down 19 through three quarters.

The Cubs were up 52-33 going into the fourth quarter. Midway through the quarter, they still held a 17-point advantage.

But then Roland-Story got going. Kade Faga converted a three-point play and Dylan Ihle drained a 3-pointer to get the Norsemen within 11.

Roland-Story eventually got within 62-56 after Carter Greenfield hit a free throw and Matheason scored a basket. But there were only nine seconds left and Nevada managed to hold on, improving its record to 8-9 overall and 5-6 in the conference.

“Those guys never think any deficit is too big,” Roland-Story head boys’ basketball coach Darrin Berggren said. “That’s a credit to them — to fight back one possession at a time. We’ve just got to have that focus and energy the full 32 minutes that we showed that last four or five.”

Nevada helped Roland-Story get back in the game by only going 13 of 29 from the foul line. But the Cubs made nine 3-pointers and that made the difference.

“We came out flat on the defensive end,” Berggren said. “We didn’t recognize shooters — we knew they had two really good shooters on the perimeter, and I think they got free for eight 3s in the first half. We’d been playing great defense since Christmas break, but the first half we just didn’t show that.”

Tyler Sansgaard hit five shots from long range for Nevada. He finished with a game-high 25 points.

Kruschwitz buried three 3-pointers and scored with 17 points for the Cubs. Devin See netted 10 points and Jack Cahill added nine.

Nevada improved to 8-9 overall and 5-6 in the Heart of Iowa Conference. Roland-Story fell to 6-10 overall and 4-7.

Ihle, Matheason and Greenfield each scored 10 points to lead a balanced Norsemen attack. Matheason added five rebounds and two assists and Greenfield four boards and two assists.

Faga tacked on nine points, four rebounds and three assists and Ben Chelsvig eight points and 12 rebounds.
