Norse offense sputters in loss to Trojans

STATE CENTER — The Roland-Story football team couldn’t get its footing on offense against West Marshall in a 31-0 loss to the Trojans in its Class 2A District 7 opener Friday.

The Norsemen were held to 65 total yards and they turned the ball over three times in falling to 1-4 on the season and starting off 0-1 in the district.

“The game was frustrating on our end as we could get nothing done offensively the whole night,” Roland-Story head coach Aaron Stensland said. “We need to continue to get better at the small details of the game before we can beat people.”

Roland-Story fell behind 17-0 at the half.Preston Pope had a 3-yard touchdown run, Peyton Pope kicked a 31-yard field goal and three a 5-yard touchdown pass as time expired at the end of the first half .

The Norse defense only allowed one touchdown over the final two quarters. But West Marshall picked up one more score on a fumble recovery in the end zone.

“We played very well defensively considering their field position and how much they had the ball Friday night,” Stensland said. “I was proud of how we came out and played hard in the second half, but it wasn’t quite enough to overcome the offensive struggles and the turnovers.”

Zach Twedt had a monster game defensively for Roland-Story with 18.5 tackles, including 13 solo stops. Freshman Luke Patton stepped in at quarterback and threw for 35 yards and added 10 rushing, Kyle Selby recorded 12 yards receiving and 10 rushing, Sam Charlson ran for 11 yards and Will Bunn caught one pass for eight yards.

Peyton Pope had 102 yards rushing and 48 receiving, Caleb Keigan 68 yards passing, Preston Pope 56 yards, rushing Jarrin Goecke 79 yards on the ground and Evertson 51 yard receiving for West Marshall. The Trojans improved to 3-2 overall and start off 1-0 in the district.

Roland-Story heads back home this week to face Union Community (0-5, 0-1). The game will start at 7:30 p.m. this Friday in Story City.
