DES MOINES — Roland-Story boys' track team raised the bar when it mattered most.

The Norsemen placed in four events and came close in a couple others at the state coed track meet last Thursday through Saturday in Des Moines.

“The state track meet was a great way to end a terrific season for us,” Roland-Story head boys' track coach Brian Petersen said. “To place and score points in four events and to take nine total events to state is a great reward for all of these kids and reflects their hard work this year.”

The top two events for the Norsemen, Grant Olson in the 400-meter dash and the 4 X 400 relay, saw them far surpass their seeding heading into state.

Olson entered the meet seeded 10th in the 2A open 400. But despite the sweltering heat, he beat his qualifying time by 0.73 seconds, running a career-best time of 50.83 seconds to win Heat 2 and place fifth overall.

“That was the goal,” Olson said. “Coming into the race, I knew being in the second heat instead of the fast heat was going to hurt me a little bit. I had to go out and try to win and see what I could put up to place.”

He broke 51 seconds in the open 400 for the first time.

“I figured coming down to state with that type of competition I'd be under 51,” Olson said. “I wasn't sure where it was going to end up though. It made me feel good.”

Jon Sansgaard also ran the open 400 for Roland-Story at state. He came in 22nd with a time of :54.82.

Mediapolis' Jagger Gourley won the 2A boys' 400 in :48.75.

Olson was also part of Roland-Story's 4 X 400 team that placed sixth. The Norsemen entered the meet seeded 17th.

Seniors Carter Greenfield and sophomores Adam McIlrath and Zach Twedt joined up with Olson to run a 3:28.03 in the prelims to come in seventh. They took it up a notch in the finals on Saturday, clocking in at 3:27.14.

“It's a great way to go out,” Greenfield said. “It's Grant and my last year as a Norseman. It feels great and I love running with these four.”

Dike-New Hartford won the 2A 4 X 400 in 3:22.70.

The Norsemen finished eighth in the 4 X 100.

Twedt, Kyle Selby, Eli Thorson and Drake Day qualified for the finals on Friday with a time of :44.55. They ran a :44.64 in the finals on Saturday.

“It's quite a blessing to make it down to state,” Twedt said. “Making two finals, that's even more of a blessing. I've had a great team in the 4 X 4 and 4 X 1 — I wouldn't want to run with any other guys. They're more than just teammates. They're great people on and off the field.”

Williamsburg took first in the 2A 4 X 100 after running a :43.24.

Sam Diehl gave Roland-Story 1.5 points in the high jump by tying for seventh. His best jump was six feet, one inch to tie him with Chariton's Jackson Fisher after they both took the same amount of attempts to reach 6-1.

Sibley-Ocheyedan's Grant Brouwer won the 2A boys' high jump with an outstanding jump of 6-9.

Roland-Story's 4 X 200 and 4 X 800 teams both took 10th.

In the 4 X 200 Day, Wyatt Bunn, McIlrath and Twedt ran a 1:32.03. They were 0.16 seconds behind the three teams in front of them.

The 4 X 800 team of Greenfield, Olson, Gradyn Dowling and Nick Wakefield placed 10th with a time of 8:21.97. The Norsemen were just one-tenth behind the final scoring time of 8:20.93 by North Linn.

“It was a hot day,” Dowling said. “But I think we did as well as we could in the conditions.”

Nick Bell placed 12th in the discus with a throw of 136-7. Wakefield also ran the 3,200 in 10:04.50 to place 11th and come in just over five seconds from placing.

“I got boxed in three times,” Wakefield said. “I got too tired trying to get out. The last 600 (meters) is usually the best for me, but that felt like the slowest part of the race.”

Roland-Story's shuttle hurdle team of Ethan Taylor, T.J. Hocraffer, McIlrath and Diehl finished 14th in the 2A boys' prelims with a time of 1:03.58.

As a team, Roland-Story scored 9.5 points to place 28th. Dike-New Hartford won the 2A boys' team championship with 60 points.
