ADEL — Roland-Story is sending two wrestlers to state after producing one champion and one runner-up at the Class 2A district meet on Saturday.

Senior Koby Hassebrock (145) and junior Joe Hovick (113) will be headed to Des Moines.

Hassebrock, ranked No. 7 in 2A by The Predicament, won a district title and is returning to the big stage. Hovick placed second and qualified for the first time.

“We knew we’d have a good shot with those two,” Roland-Story head wrestling coach Leland Schwartz said. “They’ve worked so hard and they definitely deserve it.”

Hassebrock is 38-3 heading into state. At districts, he defeated Saydel’s Jake Van Houten by technical fall, 16-0, then edged Van Meter-Earlham’s Quinn Corcoran by a 4-2 decision in the finals.

“It feels great,” Hassebrock said of his district title. “The goal last year was to go to state. This year, it’s to place.”

In the championship round Hassebrock fell behind 2-0 early. He pulled within 2-1 going into the third period, then evened the score early in the period.

With 1:15 left in the third, Hassebrock came up with a clutch takedown that proved to be the difference.

“I knew it wasn’t over, so I kept fighting,” Hassebrock said. “I came back and won, so I was proud of that. Keep it cool and keep fighting and you’ll get it.”

Hovick (33-11) edged Woodward-Granger’s Aidan Honkomp by a 1-0 decision in the semifinals, then lost by a 12-0 major decision to Van Meter-Earlham’s Zane Dodson. The loss to Dodson put Hovick in a wrestleback, where he toppled Perry’s Riece Graham by a 9-4 decision to punch his ticket to state.

“First-ever time,” Hovick said. “Unbelievable.”

Hovick showed great focus — having to win the match with Graham after the loss to Dodson to earn his spot at state.

“I knew that I was stronger than him mentally,” Hovick said. “That’s all that wrestling is — not so much technique or how strong you are, just the mindset you have.”

Reynaldo Torres (138) and Michael Schiermeister (285) each came in fourth for the Norsemen.

Torres fell to both North Polk’s Nicholas Bockenstedt and Ballard’s Alex Bangs by major decision to end up with a 13-8 record. Schiermeister was pinned by No. 4 Derrin Sesker in the semifinals, then lost the third-place match to Gilbert’s Jacob Torresi by fall to finish the season at 8-8.

The state wrestling meet takes place Thursday through Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The 2A competition begins at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
